Experience

Luther began his musical journey performing saxophone with the local jazz and rhythm & blues ensemble, Just Us Band, based in Augusta, GA. His professional performance career took off with the U.S. military bands, where he performed and taught across the United States and Europe. Throughout his career, he has led and performed with numerous ensembles covering a variety of genres including Soul, Jazz, Funk, and alternative styles. Currently, Luther serves as a senior enlisted musician with the Maneuver Center of Excellence Band at Fort Moore, Georgia, while continuing to perform in Columbus, GA, and the surrounding areas

Luther Smalls, a dedicated saxophonist, and bassist with a passion for  educating others and sharing the transformative power of music.  Luther holds a  Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Alabama A&M University and a Master’s in Music Education from Boston University, where he specialized in Community and Popular Music. He began his journey teaching in the classroom for a few years, prior to entering the military. Those classroom experiences shaped his commitment to nurturing young musicians. His   professional journey expanded through service with U.S. military bands, where he performed and taught across the United States and Europe, leading diverse ensembles in Soul, Jazz, Funk, and alternative styles. When not performing or teaching, he's spending time with family, sharing the love of music with his children and instilling in them the same passion and dedication that music has given me.

Luther is a proficient musician on tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones, as well as bass guitar. His versatility and deep understanding of music make him an exceptional performer and educator.  Whether you’re a beginner eager to learn, a seasoned player seeking to refine your skills, or someone who simply loves jazz, funk, and soul, he's here to help you grow and thrive in your musical journey.
